A product requirements document (PRD) is a structured brief that defines what a product should do, for whom, and how success will be measured—before design or development begins. This template helps founders, product managers, and CTOs capture scope in a format agencies and engineering teams can estimate accurately.
A PRD defines what to build. You may still need wireframes, API contracts, architecture decisions, or a formal RFP when selecting vendors. Virtuous Techlogic can help translate a PRD into a delivery plan and realistic timeline.
A useful PRD includes the business problem, product objectives, target users, user journeys, functional and non-functional requirements, acceptance criteria, integrations, security and privacy considerations, release phases, risks, and sign-off. It should be detailed enough for estimation without prescribing every technical implementation choice.
A PRD describes what the product must do and why. A technical specification describes how engineering will implement it—architecture, APIs, data models, and stack choices. Many teams keep these separate so product and engineering can iterate independently.
Create a PRD before significant design or development work—new products, major features, migrations, or whenever multiple stakeholders must agree on scope. For very small changes, a lightweight brief may suffice.
Clear requirements, acceptance criteria, integrations, and release phasing reduce ambiguity. Vendors can estimate effort and risk more consistently when assumptions are documented.
